NORTH TAKES SEVEN-POINT LEAD AT 5th SEAVER CUP MATCHES HEADING INTO FINAL DAY
OJAI, Nov. 11 – Ryan Thornberry of Ceres and Chris Kilkenny of Arcata swept their foursomes and four-ball matches today to lead the Northern California Golf Association to a 15.5 to 8.5 lead after the first day of the 5th Seaver Cup Matches at Ojai Valley Inn & Spa.
Eight singles matches will be played tomorrow (Sunday) over the historic George Thomas, Jr.-designed golf course. With one point for the front nine, one for the back nine and one for each overall match, the NCGA needs to win just 9 points to reclaim the cup, while the SCGA needs to win 15.5 points to retain its hold on the cup. Overall, the SCGA leads the series 2-1-1.
Thornberry and Kilkenny won the front nine of their morning foursomes match against John McClure of West Los Angeles and Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes, 3 & 2, the back nine 1 up, and the overall match, 3 & 2. In the afternoon, they won the front nine, 1 up, the back nine, 3 & 2, and the overall match, 4 & 2. McClure had to play the back nine in the afternoon alone as McGihon returned home to coach his girls high school volleyball team in a CIF playoff match.
